Sighting of the Week: Spring Holiday Cards

I've heard of Googling yourself before, but this week my wife introduced me to Googling my art!  It is so much fun to see what crafts people are already creating using my cartridges.  I also love reading what they have to say about them.  Here are some projects that I found that use my Spring Holiday Cards cartridge.

Campin' Critters

When I was asked to create a camping cartridge, I will admit, I was less than thrilled.  This is mainly because I am most definitely NOT a camper.  As I started illustrating the different animals you might see during your camping trip it hit me: "What if the animals were the campers?"  Once I got to this point, then it became fun figuring out what each of the animals would be doing: a skunk stinking up the outhouse, a lazy frog catching flies with bug spray, an eagle that is a scout, a beaver that is collecting "fire" wood, etc.  And then, just for fun, I had to through on Bigfoot (who has exceptionally large hiking boots).

What the packaging doesn't really showcase are the additional features on this cartridge: 50 merit badges and 50 signs & cards.  For example the merit badge that coordinates with Bigfoot is a hiking boot and his sign says, "Bigfoot X-ing."  The porcupine's merit badge is a fire and his sign says, "Can I have S'more?" And you may be wondering what happened to my initial animal illustrations?  They all made the cartridge and are featured as 14 different "animal sighting" merit badges.

My First Cartridge

To say that I have found my dream job is a bit of an understatement.  Not only am I able to illustrate "super cute" images on a daily basis, but I also get to put my crafty spin on things, too.  When I was given the assignment for my first cartridge, I was asked to create 50 images that you could use for Valentines, St. Patrick's Day and Easter cards.  My solution:

  • 30 1-color cards that cut out in 1 solid piece (10 for each holiday)
  • 10 decorative card bases with notches built in to hold your card w/out glue
  • 3 treat boxes that also have notches to hold a card
  • 3 envelopes
  • 4 envelope seals / icons

One of my favorite things about Valentine's Day is reading all of the punny phrases that are found on store bought cards.  I felt that taking this idea and rolling the kitschy phrases across all 3 holidays would be add a humorous touch. Some of the phrase are classics, such as "You're a Fungi" and "Bee Mine"  And some are brand new, like my personal favorite (which is a Curt Jensen original), "Have a Good Friday!"

WELCOME TO TYPECAST CREATIVE

For as long as I can remember people have typecast me as "creative."  As a kid, being creative meant taking summer art classes and dreaming of having my own paint shop in my parent's garage.  As a teenager, it meant making title pages for my science and English reports that resembled my favorite movie posters.  And now, it means creating illustrations and templates that can be used by other creative people.

My goal with this blog-folio is to share with some of the creative things I am doing now, as well as some of the creative things I have done in the past.  Just as a cast of actors thrives on the reactions from their audience, I would love to hear what you think about my work.  And if you or your business are ever in need for some creativity, send me an email.  I would love to be typecast as your creative designer, too!
